Annual Race & Rally 2026 Report

Race results and event photographs can be accessed from the main event page.

A dozen boats assembled at a busy Shepards Marina in Cowes on Friday afternoon. We were squeezed in, more or less together, rafted 3 out, with others rafted 4 out almost meeting us in the middle. We had been advised that not only were we welcome at Cowes Corinthian Yacht Club, but that they routinely serve roast potatoes from 6pm. We duly gathered and enjoyed pre-supper roast potatoes, before going to collect our fish and chips. CCYC continued to provide hospitality for the evening.

Then up bright and early for the race briefing for most of us (and more CCYC health food for breakfast). The race had been brought forward an hour, due to concerns about the gathering wind in the afternoon. So then it was back to Shepards and unpack the mass of boats.

Outside the breakwater we lined up in comfortable sunny conditions to be sent off downwind and downtide. Everyone stayed well back from the starting line and the fleet were clear away across The Solent in perfect conditions.

Rounding the 1st mark the wind showed itself as we headed back upwind towards Bramble bank. Then plenty of reaching, with the bigger boats getting a longer course and everyone converging on the finish near Hill Head. The wind having built to over 20kts at times, several of the smaller boats had made the seaman-like decision to retire and head straight for Hamble.

From the finish line it was a short sail North to the calm of the River Hamble. Everyone found a berth in Port Hamble and enjoyed a quiet afternoon, before reconvening at the RAF Yacht Club for a fine meal and prize giving.

A good time was had by all, with great support from clubs, marinas and the race team. Thank you to Shepards Marina, Cowes Corinthian Yacht Club, Port Hamble Marine and RAF Yacht Club. We’ll do it all again next year, with plenty of capacity for more participants. Do join us!
