A sociable weekend at the Folly

Mark Hickman of Tarifa reports on a sociable weekend up the River Medina:

With the highlight of the weekend yet to come, the band of gaffers enjoyed a pontoon party on the Friday evening at the Folly. A pleasant hour was spent around impromptu tables that groaned under the weight of delicious food served up by the crews from the participating boats. Salty banter carried on aboard Ivy Green into the dusk and beyond.

The flood tide on Saturday afternoon saw three boats venture up to Newport Quay on the flood tide, while the other crews held the fort and awaited the arrival of Meagan to complete the gathering. Sue Pennison’s magic fingers produced another beautiful example of her knot tying skill with a perfect tiller Turk’s Head.

The day culminated with a magnificent curry made and served up for us by OGA member Paul Baker at his lovely house set on the idyllic upper reaches of the creek at Island Harbour. The happy and replete band made their way back to the boats after that perfect gathering to continue with more tales and laughter aboard the ever welcoming and cosy cabin of Ivy Green. The “fleet” dispersed on Sunday with fair winds under the now seemingly permanent Mediterranean skies.
